IBM WebSphere Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition (WCTME) gets very good marks overall for a comprehensive set of development abilities used when developing and deploying enterprise-level applications to multiple mobile client devices. WCTME uses standards-based middleware and integrates with such development tools as WebSphere Application Developer and Site Developer to create a deployment platform. Compatibility is via Java for linking tools integrated development environments (IDEs) and the Web services toolkit. IBM Service Management Framework streamlines the programming experience through the use of the Open Service Gateway initiative, which is operating system (OS)-neutral. Java is used to code most of the common development platform and interface for access to applications. Solution providers selling WCTME should know that customers must have experienced Java programmers and developers on staff, along with developers who can code for mobile devices. WCTME-developed programs give mobile users access to enterprise access service and interactive services, and WCTME's runtime environment includes an IBM DB2 Everyplace local database that holds relational data in a device when connectivity is not available. Most user interfaces are Java-coded, but Device Developer also includes a voice application programming interface (API), and a generic browser can be used.
