Macromedia's Macromedia Director MX 2004, the most recent release of the robust multimedia content development toolset for CDs, DVDs, kiosks, and the Web, gets very good marks overall. Testers found some bugs in the software, but most will probably be addressed in minor upgrades. Macromedia Director MX 2004 has been developed for multimedia requests for proposals (RFP) and content creators. During testing, Macromedia Director MX 2004 installed well on Macintosh and PC platforms. New DVD-Video support is a potentially important new feature, and several video-based tutorials available from Lynda.com are included on the installation CD. The robustness of Lingo, when combined with the accessibility of a DVD, could result in a smarter DVD. The introduction of JavaScript allows a Web developer to possibly reuse existing scripting elements created for other platforms and situations. This feature is important, particularly because JavaScript is widely used and well-documented. Cross-platform publishing is a significant and economical advantage with Macromedia Director MX 2004. Users are advised to upgrade to Macromedia Director MX 2004, and they can hope that the increasing Momentum for director will result in better documentation from Macromedia. In several months, some third party Director MX 2004 books should be available.
