In the United Kingdom, an effort is under way to build up a community, define priorities, and set national strategy for bioprocessing. The first United Kingdom bioprocessing forum was held in response to the recent BIGT (Bioscience Innovation and Growth Team) report called Bioscience 2015 from the United Kingdom government. The report stresses the importance of a powerful bioprocessing sector to bioscience in the United Kingdom. A recommendation is formation of an agenda-setting program of industry events, including the BioProcess U.K. Annual Forum. The United Kingdom presently has substantial bioprocessing capacity and expertise, particularly in the northwest and in Scotland. A National Biomanufacturing Centre will open in early 2006 near Liverpool and will provide facilities from which SMEs can manufacturing from proof-of-concept through clinical trials. There is still a need, however, for more integration and recognition of the United Kingdom as a bioprocessing cluster. Also recommended by BIGT is establishment of a network of four bioprocessing Centres of Excellence that will concentrate on education/training and research into crucial bioprocessing areas. Other plans include conducting benchmarking tests to learn how to better position the U.K. internationally within the bioprocessing sector, and also to do more to support inward investment and U.K. trade agencies in this area. The related efforts of various companies are highlighted, including those of Purely Proteins, Wyeth, Cambridge Antibody Technology, Novo Nordisk, Lonza, and HyClone.
