Systems biology is a big opportunity for bioinformatics, and medicine is another critical area emerging from bioinformatics, while a third is high-performance computing. More use of very powerful parallel computing will occur and will benefit IBM, which recently announced that the IBM BlueGene/L supercomputer has demonstrated a sustained performance of 36.01 teraflops, making it the most powerful computer ever. One of the initial applications planned by IBM for BlueGene/L is modeling of the folding of human proteins. Global grids of networks office and home computers use otherwise idle cycles for such efforts as the Smallpox Research Grid. Computing time is donated by volunteers, and has been used in screening of 35 million possible drug molecules against eight models of smallpox proteins. Other than IBM, hardware original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) were also listed among the top 10 vendors of hardware, including Sun Microsystems. As the bioinformatics market matures, IDC expects market domination to move from hardware toward services. Accelrys, an IBM application partner, is modeling all areas of the drug discovery process. An important area of growth is the study of how genes are expressed and which biological pathways are involved when the proteins are encoded.
