WiMax, Wi-Fi, and 1xEV-DO are among many portable transmission methods highlighted in a discussion of the general direction in computing and communication in general toward elimination of cables. Many industry providers now believe that broadband's actual potential is not in silo-shaped network services, but in simplification of the access tasks of communication through transparent connectivity for end users. The goal, which is not yet attainable, is the ability of the mobile/traveling worker to connect to a corporate intranet through any access network available at the time, whether Wi-Fi, WiMax, 3G, or something else. For instance, says a spokesman for managed data service provider Infonet, which provides Mobile Xpress for enterprise users, We're living and breathing portability. Internet roaming service provider iPass, a provider of global net connectivity through several access methods, says the transmission method is irrelevant because the company's business model is to connect customers via dial-up, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, 3G, PHS, ISDN, or anything else. Access methods described are General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), EDGE, W-CDMA , 1x EV-DO, Wi-Fi, WiMax, IP wireless, and wireless mesh.
