Unibrain's FireNAS 2U, a low-cost network-attached storage system (NAS) unit, gets good marks for usability, capability, interoperability, manageability, scalability, and security, with fair marks for performance. Implementation is easy, and support for FireWire means more flexibility. However, performance is somewhat slow, and no cooling or power supply redundancy is built into the device. FireNAS 2U is a good choice for most remote offices and small business environments. FireWire 800 and 400 are used to swiftly link to and receive data from FireWire-ready PCs or digital cameras. With FireWire support, IT managers can also cluster FireNAS 2U units as their companies storage needs rise. Affordable storage is based on twelve Serial ATA hard drives, each of which has a 250GB capacity, high-density. The hard drives provide low-cost storage capacity that is more than sufficient for most organizations. Just one Intel 2.8GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 1GB of double-data-rate RAM does all the processing. The operating system (OS) is Windows Storage Server 2003, which is stored on a separate duo of mirrored drives to increase reliability. Higher-priced NAS products often have dual processors and high performance SCSI or Fibre Channel (FC) hard drives. FireNAS 2U can do the fundamental file-sharing work in most Windows, UNIX, and Apple Computer Macintosh OS environments.
