BMC's Patrol Visualis 1.4, Concord Communications eHealth Suite 5.6, and Hewlett-Packard's (HP's) OpenView Network Node Manager Advanced Edition are reviewed network monitoring tools that are capable of assessing readiness for bandwidth-heavy applications. Such applications include Voice over IP (VoIP), power over Ethernet (POE), and wireless networking. Patrol Visualis 1.4 benefits from BMC's wide range of tools and agent software to collect performance information. Concord's eHealth Suite 5.6 is a network device poller that relies on many reports to glean information regarding the status of the network. Network Node Manager 7.01 is another device poller, but it integrates third-party tools and is almost universally deployed in network operation centers. None of the products has changed much over the last few years, but all have been updated with add-ons and new modules. Network Node Manager gets the highest marks, especially for the widest coverage. Patrol Visualis 1.4 is rated excellent for usability and interoperability, with good marks for capability, performance, manageability, and scalability. Network discovery is rich, and effectively positioned controls make product configure very easy. However, network data is sometimes unclear when planning for new application traffic. eHealth Suite 5.6 is a good product but gets only fair marks for interoperability. Many in-depth reports for network protocols are provided, but setup is complex, and reports may be difficult to configure. Network Node Manager 7.0l has an effective root-cause-analysis engine, but network discovery is task-intensive, and the crowded user interface sometimes hides important data.
