McAfee's McAfee Internet Security 6.0, Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2004, TrendMicro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2004, eScan 2003 Internet Security Suite, eTrust EZ Armor Security Suite 2.0, F-Secure Internet Security 2004, and Panda Platinum Internet Security are reviewed Internet security suites. Norton gets the highest marks, followed respectively by Trend Micro, eTrust, F-Secure, McAfee, and Panda. An Internet security suite is the best choice for protecting against e-mail-carried worms and viruses because such suites include two required items: a personal firewall that prevents intruders from getting inside the PCs ports and alerts to applications trying to gain access to the network without authentication; and a virus scanner, which searches for malicious code and sanitizes it before that malware can get control of the machine. Norton Internet Security 2004 provides AntiVirus 2004, Personal Firewall 2004, and AntiSpam 2004, but the AntiSpam component makes Norton the strongest of the lot. With AntiSpam, users can create lists of those whose mail should be allowed into the in-box, lists of addresses to be blocked, and customized spam rules. Also included in McAfee Internet Security are parental controls, but McAfee provides a password manager that is not included in Norton.
