Traditional integration tools such as IBM WebSphere MQ and InterSystems Ensemble will continue to be valuable tools when used with Web services, say spokespeople for the National Information Technology Center (NITC) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Those respective users of WebSphere MQ and Ensemble describe projects that may cement the case that enterprise application integration (EAI) and Web services are interlocking pieces of the same puzzle. EAI is not a software component, but rather a collection of tools and techniques that allows applications to interoperate, while Web services is a toolset of the EAI platform. Three critical roles for traditional integration tools are: use on systems that organizations prefer not to expose as a Web services for security or other reasons; as the preferred method for linking complex, transaction-centered applications; and as an integration framework for management of Web services. WebSphere MQ manages integration between various applications on different NISC platforms, helping to integrate the USDA's state and local offices and NITC. Some believe that EAI provides more security than Web services. The Florida CDF uses Ensemble and Web services to integrate data from different systems through a single view into its 300 systems and 60 databases.
