Macromedia's Macromedia Director MX 2004's most important improvements are in the areas of DVD support, JavaScript, closer integration with Flash, and various others. Implementation of the excellent major upgrade should be considered, in part because Director MX 2004 provides pre-built components that can reduce multimedia development time and has features that permit Flash and Director developers to work more closely together while blending their skills. The installation front end permits installation and exploration of the CD and also access to various features, including video training and online resources such as What's New and Support. A new Start window, which is in all the MX 2004 products, is seen upon opening the new Director MX 2004 release, and then the user can choose to open a recent item, create a new project, extend and project, or gain access to some Help resources, including What's New and tutorials. The stage/score/cast metaphor is still used, but sprite and channel naming are now supported. The interface now permits anchoring of windows in fully individual ways, but Director still has only a single undo level. Video support is included, allowing users to import, control, and play back DVDs or to build a DVD image and store it on the hard drive. Also described are scripting choices, better Flash integration, and one-step publishing features.
