A discussion is provided of a method based on the use of quantum cryptography to transfer funds. The method was developed by researchers at the Universitat Wien and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The group has reported quantum cryptography-enabled transfer of 3000 euros over a 1.45km link between Vienna City Hall and the headquarters of Bank-Austria Creditanstalt. Scientists generated a randomized encryption key through pairs of entangled photons to produce a code key that is impervious to eavesdropping. Anton Zeilinger, professor of physics at Universitat Wien, states in a sense, the key comes into existence at both sides simultaneously . . . It does not have to be transported from A to B anymore. The scientists demonstration included the use of a 16-mW, 405 nm diode laser to pump a nonlinear crystal and generated 8200 polarization entangled pairs of 810nm photons per second. Ones and zeros were generated through observation of the polarization of the entangled photos. The results were used to encode account numbers, quantity of money, and the transfer's purpose. One-time-use random keys have been shown in theory to be totally secure. The entangled photo approach improves on available quantum cryptography systems, and the former is likely to be the technology of the future.
