Integration of plug-and-play TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheets) sensors may be the newest technology in the measurement services software market. TEDS is defined by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) P1451.4 standard, and TEDS sensors substantially ease configuration and tracking of many sensor types. TEDS is based on a standardized electronic data sheet that permits DA hardware and software to automatically read scaling, input limit, calibration, and other specific information. Smart TEDS sensors store data sheets on an embedded memory chip. When a smart TEDS sensor is connected to a data acquisition system, hardware reads the data sheet information. A virtual TEDS data sheet can also be downloaded from the Web to make just about any sensor TEDS-enabled. When evaluating a data acquisition (DA) system, engineers are advised to keep in mind that time spent configuring, building, and developing code will probably be more costly than the initiative purchase of hardware and software. Quality of driver or measurement services software will significantly affect development time. If a rudimentary driver is chosen that lacks measurement services technologies, time and money may be wasted. Topics covered are a description of measurement service software, which may or may not accompany a simple basic DA driver in a DA device or system being considered for purchase; automatic DA code generation; I/O system throughput with multithreading; and multi-threading with National Instruments Data Assistant.
