Title: Taking the World by Storm

Author: Roth, Bill Article Type: Product Analysis
Source: LinuxWorld Magazine, v2 n7 P14 (1) Publication Date: Jul 2004
URL of Publication: http://www.linuxworld.com

At a recent event hosted by Sun Microsystems to promote the adoption of the most recent version of the enterprise Sun Microsystems Java 2 platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE 1.4), it was apparent that Linux is making extraordinary gains as the platform of choice for developing and deploying enterprise Java applications. When the subject of Linux was broached, vendors all agreed on the fast pace of Linux expansion and on the importance of that growth to their respective businesses. IBM WebSphere product executive Mark Heid called Linux the dead-center of our strategy. Mike McHugh, VP of engineering, WebLogic Platform, BEA, stated that Linux was the application server vendors most rapidly growing platform, and Jeff Jackson of Sun reported that Sun has had over 1 million downloads of the Linux version of its most recent application server release. Downloads are not the same as real product use, but the many downloads do indicate the popularity of Linux among Java users for servers. Sun's CEO Scott McNealy responded angrily when it was suggested that Java should be open-sourced at an industry event, but another Sun spokesperson was more conciliatory, noting that open source has been beneficial for Sun and that an open source Java specification would have to go through the Java community Process.
