Upgrading e-mail systems, such as IBM's Lotus Notes and Domino and Microsoft's Exchange, is something many chief information officers (CIOs) drag their feet on. While the common practice of upgrading comes with vendor releases of new versions, many wait until a major upgrade from the vendor is unveiled to achieve clear return on investment. Incremental upgrades may be costly to implement and not provide enough value in the form of new or enhanced features to warrant upgrades. Sometimes CIOs refrain from upgrading because major architectural changes are needed before an e-mail system can be upgraded. Lately, the sluggish economy has made e-mail system upgrades down on the list of other IT implementations, especially given the fact that having the latest e-mail technology rarely translates into a competitive edge. Whatever the reason, holding back may prove to be a costly mistake, according to some analysts. At the same time, enterprises will serve themselves well if they wait until a vendor has released an upgrade that has been fully tested and not rushed into the market with bugs.
