Title: Keeping a Tight Grip: The market for hosted e-mail hasn't taken...

Outsourced messaging is still an emerging market, albeit a slow market. The market includes Apptix's TECOS, USA.Net, Equant NV, and USinternetworking. IT managers argue that e-mail is too mission-critical to be an outsourced application and keep that application within the enterprise. IT managers cite concerns regarding privacy, management, and security for shying away from outsourcing e-mail. While many enterprises outsource entire collaboration applications, which include e-mail, outsourcing a single application such as e-mail is rare. Integration is one of the problems IT managers see in outsourcing just one component of a collaboration strategy and platform. Some argue that enterprises would not necessarily lose control over e-mail management if they outsourced this component. Enterprises can set their own policies that govern e-mailing through service-level agreements and outsourcing management agreements. Those less concerned about outsourcing e-mail are smaller companies that do not have the resources within to manage e-mail.
