The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is pushing to have its members adopt its storage management initiative specification (SMI-S) by 2005. SMI-S is designed to simplify storage management by setting a standard that allows more flexibility and avoids locking customers into proprietary platforms. SNIA has been working on SMI-S since 2002, and expects to have the complete specification ratified by June 2004. SMI-S is based on the Common Information Model (CIM) and Web-based Enterprise Management (WBEM) specifications. SMI-S should help application developers because it will create a common platform. Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and EMC Corp. are among the major storage vendors signing up partners to support SMI-S-compliant products. SMI-S will benefit companies with storage systems from multiple vendors because they will not have to learn new management tools for each vendor's hardware. The SMI-S is already CIM-compliant. Although a pure SMI-S SAN product does not yet exist, some vendors have native SMI-S programs. SMI-S uses three WEBM standards: CIM, xmlCIM, and HTTP. An object-oriented language, CIM describes managed elements across the enterprise.
