Conventional wisdom says that consolidation in the enterprise applications markets means that customers will have fewer choices as a result. It is true that consolidation in the enterprise applications market is taking place. Oracle, PeopleSoft, and J.D. Edwards are examples of consolidation in today's market. However, it is not necessarily true that consolidation results in fewer choices. It has been historically noted that when companies snap up other companies, they usually maintain and even upgrade the existing product line of the company that was acquired. If acquirers see that a product has a customer base and is critical to key business practices, chances are they will continue the line. Many vendors are taking this approach, with some moving into the open-source area. Zope, Red Hat, OpenCMS, Compiere, Anteil, Ohioedge, Aztec Software, Tate Consultancy Services, IBM, Salesforce.com, Descartes Systems Group, Computer Associates, and Hewlett-Packard are among vendors that are increasing their product lines.
