Title: Hard Choices About the Soft Side of Informatics

Author: Logan, Gordon K Article Type: Product Analysis
Source: PharmaGenomics, v4 n4 p26(2) Publication Date: May 2004

It is regrettable that informatics and IT get low priority in any laboratory business' budget. The truth is that manager budgets always fluctuate between whether to grow and spend or to contain/rationalize/save. Many informatics products are not used optimally or do not meet expectations. There are many reasons for the problem, but very few are caused solely by lack of product function. The soft side of managerial success with informatics deployments should be considered. Most support organizations are really service organizations that do not provide value-added assistance, but instead focus on reactive problem solving. Supplier relations is another area to be addressed, and the goals and pressures on the supplier should be considered when deploying software, including changes in the relationship when the process progresses from the supplier's sales team to the installation group. In a progressive customer/supplier relationship, advances in project goals are shared, and the inclusive benefit to all parties is recognized. In strategic thinking, including systems selection, the why, what, and how of system choice should be considered, but the how usually gets the most attention and resources. However, the why and what are equally important.
