Title: Take IM to the Next Level: Learn how to sustain your Exchange IM...

Guidelines for sustenance of Microsoft Exchange instant messaging (IM) services by implementing Microsoft Live Communications Server (LCS) are provided. Several scripts will need a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Mapping file because Microsoft Exchange 2000 IM domains could differ throughout the enterprise. However, in LCS the name of the AD domain is used, and the mapping file associates the old IM domain name with the new LCS domain name, which allows the old user's data to be applied to the suitable new user. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 has a new focus with new features, including mobility access found earlier in Mobile Information Server. Microsoft had required administrators to uninstall their instant messaging services before upgrading. With LCS, new features are provided and Microsoft has made installation and migration easy and problem-free. Topics covered include LCS as the next generation of Microsoft's IM services; steps in an easy migration, including simple setup through a straightforward four-choice setup screen; use of scripting to build support for tasks to be migrated; three added installation steps (configuration of the SRV record, configuration of the user account, and installation of the Messenger 5.0 client configured to use the LCS server); securing IM; keeping an IM history; and available Microsoft-created scripts that ease migration.
