Information security has overlapped two distinct divisions within an enterprise: traditional corporate security and IT. Companies are in the midst of determining whether they need an independent chief security officer (CSO) separate from the IT department and traditional corporate security. IT security problems are often found within the company. Companies should consider an independent CSO if they suffer a number of issues: inability to determine what exists within a company's infrastructure, a change in business or company growth, customer demand for more privacy and security, regulatory oversight, competitor use and success of security measures, lack of a written security policy, multiple outsourcing deals that have not been gleaned for security problems, tiered data sets of secure and less secure segments, security breaches having affected customer faith, and the inability of management to acknowledge security problems.
