Cognos, a business intelligence software tool, and other business analytics tools, are being employed by the restaurant industry to determine trends based on customer eating habits and requests. With the use of Cognos's tool, Carlson Restaurants Worldwide, parent company of T.G.I. Friday, noted that many patrons were deleting or replacing French fries, mashed potatoes, and baked potatoes with salads and vegetables. The information was captured when waiters and waitresses entered the patron's orders into the restaurant's point-of-sale systems. The data was then collected in real time and analyzed by business analysts. Once they determined this trend, they began devising a low-carbohydrate-style menu that resonated with patrons. Other restaurant chains are also following suit. While other competitors having taken the same route, Carlson Restaurant partnered with the company founded by the late Dr. Robert C. Atkins and are licensing the Atkins brand with their meals.
