A discussion of digital dashboards and enterprise performance management (EPM) shows how a dashboard can enable organizational accountability and control and how an EPM assists in reaching those goals. EPMs ability to assist personnel in becoming accountable, motivated, measured, and rewarded is shown, and EPM's relationship to business process management (BPM) and business activity monitoring (BAM) is explained. EPM can give each employee a view of the business through a personalized, still corporate dashboard that often includes a balanced scorecard display. Examples of balanced scorecard tools include strategy maps that connect desired results to drivers through cause and effect chains, and metric trees that provide decomposition of key performance indicators into source measures. The most innovative EPM systems permit users to analyze the business, collaborate with colleagues, and act to put activities back on track. Performance management can be applied to any business process where a need exists to view and analyze all the points of measure (measured objects) that define enterprise performance, productivity, and profitability. Metrics have to have accompanying goals that benchmark performance and provide a grading scale. A described five-step methodology can be applied to any process. BPM and EPM reach a nexus when the EPM metrics tree is aligned with business process.
