Title: Gaming Roundtable Highlights: Getting games for Linux...

Author: LeBlanc, Dee-Ann Article Type: Product Analysis
Source: LinuxWorld Magazine, v2 n4 p48(3) Publication Date: Apr 2004

Insights obtained from a discussion by experts of the Linux gaming industry are provided. Several issues arose 'that bear on this issue of getting games for Linux and cross-platform gaming in general.' For instance, Timothee 'TTimo' Besset of id Software, which is a gaming company that has been an advocate for cross-platform gaming, says cross-coding makes games more powerful, improves the accuracy of code, and requires avoidance of nasty operating system (OS)-specific hacks. When a game is released on multiple platforms, technical expertise has been demonstrated. Chris DiBona of Damage Studios says many may be unaware that new game companies often license the engine from a middleware company to avoid writing a whole new package. Among game companies that license engines are id Software, which supports only OpenGL. However, many newer game companies license engines, and some are written only for DirectX. There are issues of cost, return on investment (ROI), and profitability when a game engine is licensed from many game and middleware companies. Ryan 'Icculus' Gordon says there are real QA reasons to make game programming a cross-platform process, and that many game publishers do not want to have to provide technical support for Linux users.
