Title: Mainstream Games on the Linux Desktop

Author: LeBlanc, Dee-Ann Article Type: Product Analysis
Source: LinuxWorld Magazine, v2 n4 p12(5) Publication Date: Apr 2004

Four Linux gaming industry experts discuss development of mainstream games that run on the Linux desktop. They comment on the reasons that the games industry does not yet support Linux currently; the ways in which Linux is already suitable for mainstream games; the ways in which Linux is not yet ready for mainstream games; steps the Linux community can take to change the perception of Linux by the gaming industry; and each expert's 'position on technologies that permit Windows games to run under Linux, as opposed to games that run natively under Linux.' One expert points out that WineX technology from TransGaming has been ported to various disparate hardware platforms, including the Power-PC-based Macintosh OS X, the MIPS-based Sony PlayStation 2 from Sony, and various other hardware platforms. Another says the Windows-Linux argument is not preventing games from coming to Linux, and a third says game companies that do all development for Windows may not be able to justify the requirement for Linux and OS X users to play the game emulated. Games buyers might find that Windows games running emulated will run slower. A third expert says he is 70% against the concept of technologies that permit Windows games to run under Linux, but if Linux were to achieve a long-term, sustainable market, he would say he is 100% against. The fourth says Windows applications should run Windows and that having emulation for Linux will put off the emergence of Linux as a game platform with a viable level of parity with Windows or OS X.
