Startup Nanochip is hoping its MEMS storage product, which is not unlike IBM's Millipede project, can be competitive against NAND- based flash cards and the hard-disk drives found in Apple Computer's iPod MP3 player. The company's recent second-round funding of $20 million will be used to develop a marketable product, specifically the controller and drive electronics in the product's architecture. Nanochip is trying to develop chips with multigigabytes of density, which are two orders of magnitude greater than current semiconductor memories. The storage product will find its way into digital still and video cameras, MP3 players, cell phones, PDAs, and other devices that employ nonvolatile storage. Nanochip is employing a technique whereby atomic-force tips perform nanoscale reading, writing, and erasing. While IBM is still in the research and development phase, Nanochip is already lining up two foundries and hopes to launch its product by the end of 2005.
