Title: Yahoo Starts Paid Inclusion Program

Yahoo! announced that it will charge its advertisers to have their Web pages crawled with the goal of being included in Yahoo!'s search index. Site Match, Yahoo!'s paid inclusion program, was created through technology developed by Inktomi and Overture, which it acquired. Yahoo! and its search partners, which include Microsoft's MSN, will publish Site Match listings. Yahoo!'s push into paid inclusion is the company's effort to distinguish itself from rival Google. While Google decries the effect paid inclusion may have on search results, Yahoo! believes Site Match will benefit both searchers and advertisers, and sees its program as a value-added service for the users. Other search engine companies such as Ask Jeeves, which has pared down its inclusion programs, believe that search indexes should be devoid of marketing influences. Analysts warn that Yahoo! must be careful that it does not appear to favor companies that pay to be included, which would help advertisers more than consumers.
