Electronics manufacturer Royal Philips showcased its Polymer Vision display, a scrollable device that lets users read text-intensive documents, such as newspapers. The display is capable of being implemented into mobile devices such as cellular phones, letting users read from an area of five diagonal inches. This technology raises the bar by making the display 30 percent greater than those currently on such devices as a PDA. The scrollable displays will be available sometime before 2006. Philips and partner E Ink Corp will continue to develop microbead ink material, which will be used to help display the text-intensive documents. Electronic ink employs millions of microcapsules, with each microcapsule containing white and black particles. This type of technology is ideal for scrollable displays because they provide readability and consume little power. The displays support resolutions of 85 dots per inch.
