Groove Networks' Groove Workspace, Microsoft Office Live Meeting, and Mindjet's MindManager X5 Pro are highlighted in a discussion of the value of P2P when it is used for legitimate business purposes. An analyst explains that peer-to-peer (P2P) is not an application or a category, but an enabling technology that can 'improve upon existing applications that workers use and rely on daily, such as e-mail, instant messaging (IM), and software programs to share, develop, manage, and store content.' Another analyst says companies should not try to stop the use of IM by employees when the company does not have control over IM. Rather, says the analyst, IM should be 'co-opted' because it is useful. There are currently about 56 third-party IM providers that are building new enterprise IM solutions, and interest in business IM is increasing. IM is a first step toward P2P because it provides real-time communication. Therefore, companies can choose IM from AOL, Yahoo!, and Microsoft, with MSN, because those vendors have partnered with companies that offer security and network management tools. Groove Workspace is a popular P2P solution that also provides security and management for existing applications, including IM e-mail, and software. Groove has partnered with Microsoft, which has also acquired PlaceWare, a P2P Web conferencing and collaboration tool. MindManager X5 Pro is a P2P business mapping package that also can be used with Groove Workspace.
