A profile of Patrick Moore, who helped found Greenpeace, provides some background on the founding of Greenpeace and also discusses some of Moore's sometimes unexpected activities subsequently. For instance, in 1986 Moore, a PhD ecologist, backed away from the environmental movement when he joined the other side. As just one example of Moore's effort to reform environmentalism, he spoke against a ban on PVC in 2003 at Boston City Hall. Moore was president of Greenpeace from 1977 until 1979 and was a member of the international board for seven years after that. Moore was known for always getting his facts straight and for being very difficult to refute in any debate. Moore has no connection to Greenpeace currently, but likes to talk about its early efforts. Moore makes his living as a speaker, and he justifies his leaving Greenpeace in 1986 on the basis of his desire to shift from always negative points of view to more positive ones. Moore became an advocate for sustainable development and has worked to synthesize new environmental values that had been popularized as part of the conventional social and economic values that are the engine for public values. Paul Watson, Greenpeace director has called Moore a corporate whore, an eco-Judas, a low-life bottom-sucking parasite who has grown rich from sacrificing environmentalist principles for plain old money. His backing of genetic modification of foods is cited as perhaps the best evidence of Moore's integrity.
