Spam has become a large problem for companies. Some, like Audax Group, tried in-house spam filters, but found that their systems need frequent management because spammers adapt their techniques. In addition, Audax had concerns that false positives might lead to inadvertent blocking of important messages. To deal with these concerns, Audax chose Postini to handle its spam-filtering requirements. Other companies providing spam-filtering services are MessageLabs, Brightmail, and Tumbleweed Communications. Estimates of the number of spam e-mails sent range from 45 percent to 78 percent of all e-mails. The number of e-mails containing viruses is also rising. Extra costs to business from spam include bandwidth and server costs and lost productivity, and amounts to $8.9 billion per year, according to Ferris Research. Filtering before spam reaches company servers can save much of this cost. According to Postini, adaptable spam filter are necessary because spammers continuously change their techniques. Audax has had good success in reducing incoming spam with Postini's filters.
