Datawatch's VorteXML Designer 3 is an able platform for transforming text documents into eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and mapping the XML to a Schema. Features are many and stable, but VorteXML Designer 3 lacks the refinement and some features that would put it in the excellent category. Transformation is a three-step process that defines and which parts of the file data are to be captured; refinement of the hierarchical organization of the captured data; and mapping XML output to a Schema document. Input mode entails defining and refining data to be exported as XML, and Output maps the XML output to a Schema document. A view of data being manipulated is shown in the Tree pane. Identification of parts of the document to transfer to XML is via Traps, which is a pattern inside the document that the parser can repeatedly identify, including the type of data, position or form of the text in the document, or a recognizable pattern inside the text. Each Trap tool worked without a hitch during testing. A verification tool makes sure that the trap will reliability capture data throughout the file. Viewpoints include Report and Table, with Rep as the default view in Input Mode that shows a rendering of the file being manipulated. Among steps described include locating relevant information; ordering relationships of each Template for a logical XML structure; specifications of occurrences of trapped data in XML output; and application of a schema in Output mode. Among drawbacks of VorteXML Designer 3 is limitation in native operation to ASCII files; no ability to apply define Profiles automatically to each file in a selected directory; and Windows-only design.
