Eclipse Foundation's Eclipse 3.0 open source platform will be announced soon and will focus on enhancement to the Java integrated development environment (IDE) and on acting as a Rich Client Platform for tools integration and client application development. Sun Microsystems Sun Java Studio Creator, which is Sun's reportedly easy to use Java tool for building workgroup and departmental applications, is also soon to arrive and will be highlighted at the JavaOne Conference. Sun Java Studio Creator will permit development of components based on Web services, code bits, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) forms, Java servlets, and JSP. Components can be built based on Sun Microsystems Java ServerFaces and Java technology Rowsets for database access. Sun Java Studio Creator is a development tool for rapid and easy building of Java applications, says a Sun spokesman, and it uses a component-based model that was released as part of the Java platform specification known as JavaServer Faces. Eclipse has bolstered its IDE with easier installation, better menu and toolbar customization, and a new role- and experience-based approach for management of workbench features. The Rich Client Platform functionality in 3.0 offers a framework for universal application integration and can be used to build all-purpose client applications from Eclipse framework components.
