Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac is rated excellent for usability, capability, and performance, and good for interoperability, manageability, scalability, and security. Testers liked the tool for checking PC compatibility of documents and the Mac-only Project Center for convenient work organization. The Entourage e-mail client has also been bolstered by a three-column layout that looks more like Microsoft Outlook 2003 and makes it easier to view/sort e-mail messages efficiently. Entourage in Office 2004 for Mac also uses the Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning Protocol (WebDAV) for better performance in low-bandwidth environments. Entourage has better spam filtering and permits users to export personal information manager (PIM) data into an archive for easy backup. In Excel, a new Mac OS-only Page Layout View allowed testers to review and skillfully maneuver spreadsheets. This feature is not available in the PC version, but PC users will probably want it. The new Compatibility Tool, which is also a Mac-only feature, will be very attractive to business users, since it tells users whether documents will display correctly in other Office versions. The Project Center feature provides useful project management tools that integrate throughout the Office 2004 suite. No internal database is provided, nor are Microsoft SharePoint collaboration tools. Those omissions prevent Office 2004 for Mac from competing with the PC versions of Microsoft Office in most corporate settings.
