Technicolor's FlexPlay DVD screeners become unreadable 48 hours after a package is open. FlexPlay DVD screeners are designed to be a short-term anti piracy solution. However, Secure Media and Action Duplication are two companies that have purchased digital printing equipment from Auto Tech Digital. Digital printing is generally sold for marketing solutions, but its possibilities for serialization and piracy protection are huge. Replicators can be crucial for popularizing the technologies, and Action Duplication is a replicator, while Secure Media is a digital rights management (DRM) provider. Digital printing's advantages are expected to be many, including photo-quality images on the disc. A Secure Media spokesman says the technology provides photo-quality printing of 600dpi with a 180-line screen. More significantly, the machine allows discs to be customized in mass quantities, and the replicator can put a different serial number on each disc for trackability. Auto Tech's process has several differences from the process that is already available from Kammann, which is called K15. Auto Tech's machine prints on a special transfer film and is then coated with an adhesion promoter. The image is then transferred to a disc with a heterogeneous-activated roller. The photographic reproduction process has a much better quality than offset, all process steps are digital, and no hazardous materials are used. With the replicator, discs with this type of printing have to be priced higher and also assist a studio in fighting piracy.
