A discussion is provided of the significance of machine vision in test and measurement systems. Machine vision has been part of the distributed computing shift, just as electro-chemical, electro-mechanical, and other modern technologies have, on the sensor side. For instance, such manufacturers as DVT have added miniature computers with advanced image analysis abilities into the bodies of cameras. Such smart cameras can do decision-making based on what passes before the lens and send the information directory to a system over the Ethernet or any other networking protocol. Cybernetic eyes can be installed/plugged-in on any system very easily. Some companies are also packaging computer intelligence into industrial-strength smart monitors because most applications that need smart monitors are also used in environments where they must be ruggedized. Such offerings often use advanced flat panel technology. The fundamental components of a smart monitor are the display, a single-board computer, and network connection. A smart monitor can be the host for a traditional vision system, but the technology works most effectively in a networked vision system. Smart cameras are very important because they provide access to the network and can make analytical decisions based on what is seen to reduce the quantity of information that the network must carry.
