IBM's Workplace Client Technology, a set of downloadable middleware tools, is designed to improve the productivity of mobile workers. The tools will provide some local functionality to business applications launched through a server. Many of IBM's Lotus applications will be modified to support the Workplace environment. IBM plans to charge customers an annual fee for the technology, in addition to initial price of the applications. Server-based applications have been expensive to operate because of the requirements for server processing power and network bandwidth. By offloading computation tasks to the client, costs can be saved. Workplace Client will support mixing and matching applications and operating systems. Microsoft does not intend to add support for Workplace Client to its applications. However, other companies that support the concept are Nokia Corp., Adobe Systems, PeopleSoft, and Siebel Systems.
