Acsis, which is partnering with SAP, will integrate its Acsis Data- Link device control software with SAP's Auto-ID infrastructure. Data-Link gathers and integrates information from multiple devices and from radio frequency identification (RFID) data-collection devices, which include barcode scanners, palletizers, and scales. Acsis, SAP AGA, Manhattan Associates, and IBM are trying to help customers comply with Wal-mart Stores' requirements that product makers use RFID by January 2005. Their goal is to support standards from EPCglobal, which has developed a set of eight RFID standard specifications, and to assist customers in better complying with customer mandates. EPCglobal's specifications include tag-encoding schemata, multiple different hardware communication interfaces, tag- reader message, EPC-global Network application requests, a common vocabulary to be used in EPCglobal, and an object name service format. The specifications are in multiple stages of completion, including imminent approval and draft form. The agreement between Acsis and SAP should allow users to get data into a usable format, say Acsis officials. Manhattan Associates says applications in its 2004 research and development (R&D) suite have upgrades, including those for Transportation Planning & Execution, Carrier Management, Reverse Logistics Management, and Distributed Order Management.
