The 100 fastest growing technology companies are listed, along with their revenues, earnings, cash flow growth, stock return over a 12 months, changes in headcount, and a brief description of why each company is successful. Comtech Telecommunications tops the list after having snagged a $418-million contract for building communications equipment called mobile tracking systems. Relatively small Comtech bested huge defense contractors such as GTE, Litton, and Northrop Grumman after proving its concept. Nearly a quarter of the top 100 are in the Midwest, and five have headquarters overseas. Business services, including outsourcing, is the biggest single category of top 100 growers, while electronics and software combined still account for half the list. More than half of the companies, including five of the leading 10, were not on the 2003 list. For instance, UTStarcom, a maker of cell phone systems for China and other developing economies, dropped from number one in 2003 to number 34 in 2004 after competition reduced its margins. However, 2004 leader Comtech is expected to land new communications systems contracts with the Department of Defense and a few multinationals, which could without difficulty add $100 million to its sales over the next few years.
