The consensus at an event hosted by Sun Microsystems is that tools will be the next Java battleground under the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.4 specification. IBM, BEA Systems, and Oracle have emerged as the market leaders for application servers. The application server vendors are looking at tools for specific applications servers as a way to get customers to commit to their platforms. BEA is giving away a tool called EJBgen that makes it easier for independent developers to create deployment descriptors. EJBgen creates proprietary code for use on BEA's WebLogic server. Some critics believe that this defeats Java's promise of being able to be written once and deployed anywhere. Sun is offering a free kit that tests applications for compliance to the J2EE standard. Sun, IBM, Oracle, Tmax Soft, and Trifork are companies with application servers that are J2EE 1.4-compliant. Work is starting on J2EE 1.5 specification, with a preview expected in September 2004 and official release in July 2005.
