While radio frequency identification (RFID) tags have received more attention, a new type of radio tag called real-time location system (RTLS) offers more benefits. RTLS tags send a signal at regular intervals, and are reusable. The data can be used to find the exact location. Because they are much more costly than RFID, they are most useful for expensive items like automobiles or cargo containers. NYK Logistics uses RTLS at its facility in Long Beach, California, to track cargo containers. It used a barcode system before, but was handling too much volume to continue using its old system. The RTLS has enabled it to find specific containers much more quickly. The system uses an 802.11b network with WhereNet communications software. Costs to install the system were similar to that for a barcode system. The firm expects its labor savings to pay for the system within a year.
