Crimson Micro Systems believes that inefficiency rather than lack of capacity is the biggest problem with networks. The delivery cost of providing services is too high, and needs to be cut by 95 to 99 percent. Crimson's new Ruby microcommunications processor uses an silicon integration approach Crimson calls an 'ecosystem-on- a-chip', integrating transport, aggregation, and grooming with a central processing core. Using software, Ruby can be adapted to serve different market segments. Ruby is made using Crimson's Transport-Aggregation-Grooming (TAG) architecture, which incorporates six functions on the same piece of silicon. Crimson believes it has positioned itself to replace cards that perform the same function. Analysts think that Crimson will be an important company in this market, but that others are working on similar approaches. Future Crimson products will add transmux and data determination capabilities. Crimson has been working with many of the leading network systems vendors, although they have not announced any contracts yet.
