IDV-120 Ident Code is a component of Bronway's SoftPack-260, a packaging machine that processes digital media with a special optical head that was designed with PTC's Pro/ENGINEER. Off-the- shelf cameras, frame grabbers, and a PC permit barcode data to be read quickly. The SoftPack-260 is for mid-to high-end automated CD/DVD soft-box packaging and can handle various soft-box types for CD-disks are rates as high as 60/minute. Components of SoftPack-260 include a title-sheet insertion module, and as many as three booklets can be inserted into each box; the present design permits insertion of one disk into the box. Up to 400 empty DVD boxes are stacked ready for packaging. After the machine is initialized, the DVD boxes are opened to allow automated insertion of cover material. After the insertion, a vacuum-assisted picker puts booklet(s) in the left-hand side of the package. Before packaging, the code on the inner mirror band of the DVD has to be read to make sure that the correct disk is put in the right package, and if the code on the DVD is wrong, the disk automatically is transferred to a separate reject spindle. The optical head was specially designed to correctly position and illuminate the inner mirror band of the CD before any imaging can be done. To ensure that images from the mirror band inside the data area of the disk (which contains alphanumeric and barcode data) can be captured correctly, the system does not allow the end-user to change the focus or aperture of the imaging system.
