Title: A Black Eye for Bioethics

Author: Davies, Kevin Article Type: Product Analysis

Professor Elizabeth Blackburn and William May have been replaced on the President's Council on Bioethics by two political scientists and a pediatric neurosurgeon, and the replacements have stated their strong criticism of stem cell research and therapeutic cloning. Council chair Leon Kass had been shown before Blackburn's dismissal (in a phone call from the White House) a draft of an article co- authored by Blackburn with Janet Rowley that lists various concerns regarding two published reports ('Beyond Therapy' and 'Monitoring Stem Cell Research'). Among scientists and bioethicists who are aghast at the replacement of Blackburn is Nobel laureate Harold Varmus, who had been an advisor to Kass previous to the formation of the panel. Among topics covered are a highly critical report from the Union of Concerned Scientists on the Bush administration's 'misuse of science'; Kass's intention to move the work of the bioethics council away from the field of embryonic stem cell research; Harvard University's plan to create a Stem Cell Institute built with private funds; and Doug Melton's description of the creation of 17 new ES cell lines, which will be made available freely to eligible researchers.
