Many 3730XL machines from Applied Biosystems run 24/7 with about .05 million lines of code written in Celera Assembler at the Venter Foundation's Joint Technology Center as part of a project for sampling microbial genomes in the oceans of the world. The 95-foot yacht Sorcerer II is equipped with all types of technical devices. A proof of concept for the world voyage undertaken by J. Craig Venter. Venter and his fellow scientists report the finding of 1.2 million genes, including almost 70,000 completely novel genes, which came from an estimated 1,800 genomic species, including 148 novel bacterial phylotypes. The most advanced aspect of Venter's work is the 'sheer scale of Venter's effort and vision.' Early reaction to the Sargasso scenario and Venter's global plan has been cautiously good, and Venter is aware that he has to return to the Sargasso to do more sampling, since his first results are based on samples gleaned from only 1,500 liters of water. Celera software was changed somewhat to allow identification of overlapping DNA fragments. Scientists Paul Falkowski and Columban de Vargas worry that Venter's strategy depends on 'technological capabilities that are not currently accessible to the vast majority of marine microbiologists' and that 'despite their huge sequencing effort, Venter and collaborators were able to reconstruct only two almost- complete genomes, and this was with the help of fully sequenced templates.' The Sorcerer II expedition has three full-time staff working with the U.S. State Department to obtain needed permits.
