Calculation management offers a solution for risk management and preservation of high-value knowledge in the engineering enterprise. XML is highlighted as a technology that will create a 'bright future for combining calculation management solutions with various applications and Internet-based tools.' Unmanaged calculations in an engineering environment are factors in errors that appear downstream or in final products; lost knowledge; rework and inconsistency; and cold audit trails. When calculations are managed at an enterprise level, return on investment (ROI) in engineering will increase and companies will have an advantage over their less agile and efficient competitors. Therefore, companies have to be aware of the critical role of calculations as an important engineering data type, and also have to understand internal processes and technologies needed to ease management, sharing, and storage of calculations. Calculation management is possible when the following principles are observed: management of underlying assumptions; the freedom to do calculations through a live interface with full functioned equations through user-friendly display to produce hard copy that can be easily used, to interoperate cleanly with other software; and adherence to established rules and procedures for calculation management. To reduce management burden, technology has to be chosen to ease automation, standardization, and storage of calculates.
