Converging voice and data into a single network has many benefits, but there is one liability that some carriers such as SBC, AT&T, and Nortel Networks may be facing. That is that large enterprises may decide that they can manage their own converged networks without the help of carriers. Converged data and voice networks mean greater efficiency and tremendous savings. However, for carriers that are investing billions of dollars to build next-generation infrastructure, they must be proactive and strategize to address abandonment by enterprises. Carriers are investing in VoIP business services to be more attractive to large enterprises. Carriers need to educate their large customers about their value add. For one, IT departments are ill-equipped to manage sophisticated networks. Carriers can focus on critical connections between customer premises for revenue streams. To feed enterprise demand for greater control, carriers might wish to deploy Web-based management tools for self- service.
