As legal professionals depend more and more on the Internet as a channel to create, collaborate, and distribute their work, they need to know how to protect themselves and their data from hackers and be educated about security issues. Law firms need to have antivirus software, personal firewalls, and intrusion detection tools installed. Law firms should educate their employees about viruses and the risk taken when opening up e-mail attachments from unknown sources. As instant messaging (IM) proliferates in the business world, law firms need to understand that IM systems are not secure platforms. In fact they are ideal spreaders of computer worms and viruses. Current antivirus software should be installed on all desktop and laptop computers, as well as for IM applications. Spyware is most problematic in peer-to-peer programs. Again, education is the key. Employees need to be on guard for suspicious- looking files and act responsibly when it comes to downloading files from the Internet.
