While Macromedia's Flex 1.0, an XML-based architecture that provides broad Web service support, is a formidable first entry into the rich Internet applications market, it is marred by a few flaws. Surprisingly, Flex is not based heavily on Flash. Its XML-based scripting language is Macromedia Flex Markup Language and works within an XML editor. That is not to say that Flash was not employed at all. Its client-side applications are deployed within a browser to systems that run Flash Player 7. This type of architecture gives users a lot of flexibility in terms of building applications. By the same token, it also can be a flaw in that developers will likely be going back and forth among environments to build Flex applications. Under collaborative projects, this will not be a problem. However, the process may be a bit monotonous and force developers to abandon Flex and remain with Flash. Despite its drawbacks, it has a number of features, such as Flex Presentation Server and XML and Web service support.
