The real winners in the peace pact between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft are the users. Sun and Microsoft customers have been requesting for years more interoperability among the various systems, platforms, middleware, and software from the two companies. Microsoft has been pushed in this direction by the uncomfortable thoughts of customers seeking to move off the Sun Solaris platform and choosing Linux instead of Microsoft because conversion to a UNIX-like platform is easier than conversion to the Windows operating system. While Sun has seen this trend coming and has attempted to reduce costs to keep Solaris competitive with Linux and even provide Linux options to keep customers from switching. Microsoft has had to come to the realization that it must be able to play in a mixed computing environment, which is more the norm than the exception within the enterprise world. Whatever the motivation, both companies' new direction will be beneficial to their customers.
