Title: Baiting a Trap for Intruders: Palisade's SmokeDetector honeypot...

Enterprises are legitimizing honeypots by using them as early warning systems and achieving accurate readings. Palisade Systems' SmokeDetector 2.1 is a decent honeypot in a market crowded with such products as KeyFocus's KFSensor, Network Security Software's Spector 7.0, and open-source product Honeyd. Palisade Systems' offering is the only hardware product in the market. As a low-interaction honeypot, SmokeDetector is an effective standalone appliance, which is part of Palisade's Security Suite. SmokeDetector has a decent GUI-based management console and good standard reports. Its downsides include difficulty in setting the appliance up, inflexibility in its ability to configure emulations, and no emulations of the latest operating systems, including Microsoft. Its higher price, compared to software costs, may make some enterprises hesitate, especially considering that its price tag is not aligned to its performance capabilities.
